Wolfgang Bozic
Wolfgang Bozic (born November 9, 1947 in Graz ) is an Austrian conductor.
Life
Wolfgang Bozic grew up in Graz . During his school days he began his training as a pianist at the conservatory in his hometown, today's University of Music and Performing Arts . After graduating from high school he studied piano and conducting there and graduated with honors in 1969. He then studied on a scholarship for a year at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Franco Ferrara and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Carlo Zecchi and Bruno Maderna . In 1970 he was initially hired as a solo repetitor at the Graz Opera House , where he took on his own conducting from 1971. In 1972 he conducted the Austrian premiere of Benjamin Britten's opera “ Death in Venice ” there. In 1981 he was the winner of the " Karl Böhm Competition ."
From 1975 to 2001 he held the position of first conductor at the Graz Opera House . In addition to works from the German and Italian repertoire (including numerous operas by Richard Strauss , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Richard Wagner , Giacomo Puccini , Giuseppe Verdi , Alban Berg ), he directed four productions of a Janáček cycle there in 1996/97 , which included the operas " Jenůfa " , " Káťa Kabanová ", " The Excursions of Mr. Brouček " and " From the House of the Dead " included, as well as numerous concerts and several world premieres as part of the " Styrian Autumn ", for example. B. by Otto M. Zykan and Wolfgang Rihm .
Regular guest conductors in concerts and operas have also taken him to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Volksoper, the Budapest Symphony Orchestra , the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria , the Saarland State Theater , the Hamburg State Opera, the Latvian National Opera in Riga, the Seoul Metropolitan Opera (1996 Korean premiere of “ Rosenkavalier ” by Richard Strauss ), to the Theater Basel , to the Bruckner Orchester Linz (“ Tannhauser ”, “ Cenerentola ”, “ The Barber of Seville ” and others), to the Teatro Verdi Triest (“ Wozzeck ”,“ Salome ”,“ Peter Grimes ”and others), to the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona / Arena di Verona , to the Komische Oper Berlin and to the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra Tokyo] (2008“ Aida ”staged by Peter Konwitschny , 2011 a concert program). In 2002 he moved to the Volksoper Vienna for two years .
From 2006 to 2011 he was General Music Director of the Lower Saxony State Orchestra of the Hanover State Opera . In addition to operas by u. a. Benjamin Britten , Giuseppe Verdi and Leoš Janáček , he also led Richard Wagner's entire “Ring” cycle under the direction of Barrie Kosky . He also designed and directed concerts with works a. a. by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven , Franz Schubert , Antonín Dvořák , Igor Stravinsky , Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski , Anton Webern and Gustav Mahler .
From 1986 until his retirement in 2017, he was full professor for score playing and accompaniment at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts.
Wolfgang Bozic is married to the writer Jenny Erpenbeck and lives in Berlin and Graz.
