Rudolf Bibl (conductor)

Rudolf Bibl (born May 4, 1929 in Vienna ; † January 27, 2017 in Frontignan , France) was an Austrian conductor and pianist .

Life

Rudolf Bibl studied piano, clarinet and composition parallel to attending a grammar school at the Vienna Music Academy and attended Hans Swarowsky's conducting class . From 1948 he was a répétiteur at the Graz Opera , in 1952 he moved to Innsbruck as Kapellmeister and then returned to Graz as the first operetta conductor . From 1960 he worked at the Raimund Theater in Vienna and at the Theater an der Wien . From 1969 to 1973 he was music director in Trier , from where he made guest appearances in France and Luxembourg.

From 1973 he was conductor at the Vienna Volksoper , where he led over 2,200 performances, including the bird dealer , The Merry Widow , Die Csárdásfürstin and Die Fledermaus . From 1995 to 2008 he was musical director of the Mörbisch Seefestspiele , for which he put together his own orchestra with the Burgenland Symphony Orchestra, consisting of students from the Joseph Haydn Conservatory of the Province of Burgenland .

Foreign guest appearances and concert tours have taken him to Japan, Italy, Germany and France, for example to the Berlin State Opera and the Opéra Bastille in Paris. From 1999 to 2003 he conducted Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow at the Vienna State Opera .

Bibl remained closely associated with the Vienna Volksoper until the end. In May 2016 he conducted three performances of Kálmáns Csárdásfürstin as part of a guest performance in Tokyo , his last conducting was a performance of Die Fledermaus on January 1, 2017. According to information from the house, he conducted 2,273 performances at the Vienna Volksoper.

Rudolf Bibl was the grandson of the composer and organist of the same name (1832–1902) and nephew of the historian Viktor Bibl .
