The Leibnitz train station is the station of the municipality of Leibnitz in Styria .

The station is located on the Austrian Southern Railway and is the second largest station in southern Styria after the Spielfeld-Straß border station . The station has seven tracks, including three platform tracks, two station buildings and another building used by a construction office of ÖBB Infrastruktur. The station also had a warehouse, which was demolished in April 2010. The Leibnitz train station is a long-distance stop and S-Bahn station for the S5 on the Styrian S-Bahn . The almost 25 km long Sulmtalbahn to Pölfing-Brunn an der Wieserbahn used to branch off from Leibnitz station; it was discontinued in 1967 and largely removed in 1976.

Station renovation

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 11, 2009, and in January 2010 work began on renovating the Leibnitz train station. In the meantime, two platform tracks, including the corresponding platforms and the level crossings, have been demolished and replaced by a temporary central platform with an overpass. Subsequently, the number of tracks is to be further reduced and a new, final central platform including roofing and passenger tunnel will be set up.

According to earlier plans, the existing station building should have been renovated and connected to the adjoining ancillary building with a pitched roof. In the case of a planning change, which was published on October 18, 2010, it was decided to demolish and rebuild the station building, which also includes the redesign of the bus station and the forecourt. The total construction costs will increase from the originally planned 82 million euros by 5.5 million euros to now at least 87.5 million euros. Completion was planned for the end of 2012.

As part of the station renovation, a level crossing is to be left open and replaced by an underpass. This underpass is controversial. In 2004, this plan, described as the only possible one, was presented to the population. This was criticized from an urban planning perspective by well-known experts in the course of a workshop at Vienna University of Technology in 2009. Inquiries from a private initiative to check a direct variant came from 2004, with reference to newly built underpasses from 2009. The political parties in Leibnitz ( SPÖ , Bürgerforum Leibnitz, Greens ) and the local media reported on this in detail.
