Pedra Badejo is a town with around 10,000 inhabitants on the east coast of the island of Santiago in Cape Verde . It is located about 40 km north-northwest of the state capital Praia and is the seat of the district administration of the district ( concelho ) Santa Cruz .
Until 1975 the city was called Santiago Mayor , this name is still widely used today.
There has been a town partnership with Leibnitz in Austria since 1983 .
Transport links
From the bus station at the Sucupira market in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, around 40 km away, Pedra Badejo can be easily reached with the Aluguer buses that are typical of Cape Verde and frequent them . However, the buses do not run according to a fixed timetable, but depart as soon as there are enough passengers. The journey time is just over an hour. The road is in good condition and can be used in any weather.
Pedra Badejo also has a small port.
Infrastructure
Pedra Badejo has a health center and several schools. In the city center there are numerous shops and a few simple restaurants. In front of many houses, locals sell vegetables they have grown themselves at stalls.
A former health center has been converted into a hotel on the beach, which is a popular excursion destination for residents of the capital, especially on weekends and is not far from the city center.
Attractions
There are two churches to visit in Pedra Badejo: The modern Catholic church is located in the newer, upper part of the city. The New Apostolic Church rises in the main street at the entrance to the village . A monument to a local musician is worth seeing on the main square.
Pedra Badejo is surrounded by irrigated land. Not far from the city, after a construction period of 17 months , the first dam in Cape Verde, financed by China, was completed in 2006, the Barragem de Poilão , which is located between the towns of Poilão and Lavada dos Orgãos. The reservoir has a capacity of 1.7 million m³ and is used for drip irrigation of 64 hectares of arable and garden land from around 100 farms. To the south of the reservoir, where you can watch birds, there is an information pavilion.
