Robert Prince (video game composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert "Bobby" C. Prince III (* before 1966) is a composer of computer game - soundtracks .

Life

In the 1990s he mainly worked for id Software and Apogee / 3D Realms and created music and sound effects for Commander Keen 4-6, Catacomb 3D , Wolfenstein 3D , Spear of Destiny , Doom , Rise of the Triad , Doom 2: Hell on Earth , Duke Nukem II and Duke Nukem 3D and other games.

Prince attended the University of Georgia , from which he graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology . He then briefly studied at the University of Georgia before joining the army. After he returned, he earned his doctorate in psychology in 1972 and began studying law. Eventually he did his PhD in this subject. For a long time he worked as a lawyer and began to deal with MIDI music on the side. He worked with his brother on Cakewalk and Texture.

Robert then unexpectedly received an offer from Scott Miller (Apogee Software), who hired him on the spot. A few months later he was hired by John Romero from the then small software company id Software.

Individual pieces of music from games such as Doom or Duke Nukem are often similar to hard rock and metal songs that were current at the time, for example by Pantera (Mouth For War, Rise), Alice in Chains ( Them Bones ), Metallica ( Master of Puppets ) or Slayer ( Behind the Crooked Cross ). Robert Prince knew how closely melodies could be based on their template without resulting in copyright infringement . In fact, none of the sampled bands have ever taken legal action. Conversely, the band Megadeth later even covered the theme song for Duke Nukem 3D .
