Rise of the Triad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rise of the Triad or ROTT for short is a first-person shooter for the PC that was released on December 21, 1994 by Apogee Software . As excessive violence occurs in the game, it was indexed in Germany .

The game was originally designed as an add-on to Wolfenstein 3D (also uses a heavily modified version of its engine ) and was marketed by Apogee Software as a competitor to Doom . ROTT is, in the development history of Apogee / 3D Realms, also the direct predecessor of Duke Nukem 3D .

The game

story

A militant sect called “Triad” wants to usurp world domination and has its headquarters on a monastery site. An agent is smuggled in to eliminate the order, but he is immediately exposed and expected. This now has to fight its way into the heart of the monastery.

Game design

ROTT combined well-tried elements of the genre with new ideas. Above all, the revolutionary weapon system set standards. As the first first-person shooter, the character was able to carry a second handgun at the same time. The use of the weapons has been adapted to real conditions. The character could no longer transport an unlimited number of weapons.

It also set new standards in level design, e.g. B. through the use of glass panes and other objects that appear transparent. For the first time, the bombardment led to traces in the level design, including bullet holes in the walls.

Weapons & Effects

The weapon selection in ROTT was, compared to the former first-person shooters, much harder and more extensive. There were flamethrowers whose fire ran along the ground and left behind only a black skeleton of the enemy, whose bones then fell to the ground with the sound of a xylophone. For the first time, there were also sources of poison gas coming out of the ground that could only be avoided with a breathing mask.

The vomitorium

In order to emphasize the negative effects of drugs, the “mushroom” was added to the extras. When it was recorded, the screen content wobbled back and forth, which could lead to the player feeling sick. The additional level "Vomitorium" (Engl. To vomit 'vomit') consists of a room full of "mushrooms", which it is hardly possible to avoid.

music

The music is in the form of midi pieces and comes from the pen of Lee Jackson, who also wrote music for Duke Nukem 3D . The “fish polka”, which is reminiscent of the dopefish , is considered particularly outstanding .

publication

In March 2020, the indexing of the shareware version of ROTT was lifted in Germany. However, the full version of the game will still remain on the index.

Publication of the source code

The source code of ROTT was on 20 December 2002 under the GPL published and the game was two days later in a version for Linux available. ROTT has also been ported to Mac OS , Dreamcast , PlayStation Portable , Nintendo DS and to 32-bit Windows systems.

New edition

At QuakeCon 2012, Apogee Software and Danish development studio Interceptor Entertainment announced a new edition of the brand called Rise of the Triad . The first person shooter is developed by Interceptor Entertainment on the basis of the Unreal Engine 3 and should be based strongly on the original. So far, the game has only been announced for PC as a download via Steam . Due to the indexing of the game Rise of the Triad , its new edition is advertised as Hunt in Germany .
