Tom Hall

Tom Hall (born September 2, 1964 in Wisconsin , USA ) is a computer game programmer. He studied computer science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . Since 1987 he has been developing computer games. He is one of the co-founders of id Software , where he worked on games like Commander Keen , Doom and Wolfenstein 3D .

After disagreements with John Carmack , he left id Software and moved to Apogee Software , now known as 3D Realms . There he worked on Duke Nukem 3D and briefly headed the development of the game Prey , which was later put on hold. The basic concept conceived by Hall was taken up again in 2001 and implemented by the Human Head Studios .

Later he founded the development company Ion Storm together with John Romero . After several games proved to be financial failures and internal disputes arose, he and Romero left Ion Storm and started their own company, Monkeystone Games , which specialized in games for mobile phones and handhelds . Hall later moved to Midway Games , where he only stayed for a short time. After a short period of self-employment as a consultant for independent developers, Tom Hall was hired by the KingsIsle Entertainment studio , where he was involved in the development of two MMOs until the end of 2010 . He worked with John Romero at Loot Drop until it closed in 2015 .

Hall is also known for the invention of the dopefish , a character from one of the Commander Keen games, which was later quoted in countless games and is considered an integral part of video game culture.
