Wage Rudolf Soepratman (born March 9, 1903 in Jatinegara, today in Jakarta , † August 17, 1938 in Surabaya ) was the composer of the Indonesian national anthem Indonesia Raya .

Soepratman was a young Indonesian songwriter who composed both the lyrics and the melody for what would later become the Indonesian national anthem in 1924. It was first heard publicly on October 28, 1928 at an Indonesian youth congress in Batavia . This work became a popular song that emphasized the unity of Indonesia and was sung at political demonstrations. After the former Dutch colony gained independence, it was made the national anthem in 1945.

His father Djoemeno Senen Sastrosoehardjo was a soldier. Soepratman first attended elementary school. Two years after his mother died in 1912, he was sent to live with his older sister in Ujung Pandang . She added “Wage Rudolf” to his name so that he could attend the Dutch school. He also composed other pieces Dari Barat Sampai ke Timur (1925), Bendera Kita , Indonesia Hai Ibuku (1927), Ibu Kita Kartini (1931), Mars Parindra , Mars Surya Wirawan (1937) and Matahari Terbit (1938).
