Monkeystone Games, Inc. was an independent American computer game - development studio and publisher based in Quinlan ( Texas ). Founded by well-known game developers John Romero and Tom Hall together with Brian Moon and Stevie Case , the company focused on developing games for portable multimedia devices and handheld consoles such as the Pocket PC , Game Boy Advance , cell phones and PDAs .

Company history

Monkeystone Games was founded in the middle of 2001, a few months after Hall, Romero and Case left the development company Ion Storm . Moon was previously Chief Financial Officer of Ensemble Studios . One of the reasons for starting such a small company for Romero was that he was able to work closely on joint projects with his friend Hall and his then partner Case and, in contrast to his work at Ion Storm, also directly on the programming of the Software was involved. Since the company was relatively small, the founders each took on several roles in company management and game development. Thanks to Romero's and Hall's fame in the games industry, the founding there received wide media coverage.

The publications included both in-house developments and porting of well-known games to mobile gaming platforms. Among other things, one worked together with the publisher THQ and its department THQ Wireless.

The first Monkeystone game was Hyperspace Delivery Boy , which was released for the Pocket PC in December 2001. Ports for Microsoft Windows , Mac OS X , Linux and Game Boy Advance followed. The second in-house development was the puzzle game Congo Cube , which was originally developed for Windows and later ported to Pocket PC, J2ME mobile phones and BREW mobile phones.

Another success was the implementation of the first-person shooter Red Faction for Nokia's N-Gage . The game developed on behalf of THQ was the first first-person shooter for this handheld and was completed in October 2003. In addition to its in-house developments, Monkeystone was the publisher for titles such as Argentum , Rocket Elite , Bust Em and Night Shift .

Brian Moon left the company in 2002, followed by Stevie Case, who left Monkeystone in mid-2003 after her relationship with Romero broke up. After the game Red Faction was completed, the remaining founders Romero and Hall moved to Midway Games in October of the same year , after which the development studio was continued by Lucas Davis. Later, the rest of the Monkeystone team were also involved in the development of Romero's and Hall's Midway Area 51 project . In January 2005, the company, which was now managed by one person, was finally dissolved.
