history

Rondo with Superjednostka

The roundabout was created in the course of the architectural redesign of Katowice city center in 1965. A tram stop has been set up in the middle of the roundabout and shops have been set up in the basement. The roundabout was rebuilt between 2004 and 2006. A tunnel (676 m) with two tubes and three lanes per tube was built for Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa, which runs in an east-west direction. An underpass system for pedestrian traffic. The tram stop remained. Above ground, a dome made of steel and glass was built which should match the design of the Spodek . It has a height of 14 m and a span of 80 m. The surface of the dome measures 1000 m². There are shops in the dome and the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice has an exhibition space there. The cost of the renovation work was about 340 million zloty , of which 15 million zloty went to the dome.
