Pond Hockey Cup

The Pond Hockey Cup is in Germany being transmitted Hockey tournament which held in its original form on a lake and the Federation of German Hockey in collaboration with the TV channel Sport1 is organized and partly televised. The winner's trophy - a gold-plated snow shovel - was awarded for the first time in 2011.

In the first edition, a total of 56 teams took part in all classes.

First preparations for the Pond Hockey Cup 2012 on the Rießersee

The Pond Hockey Cup was first held in February 2011 by the German Ice Hockey Federation on the Rießersee in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and was initially considered a supporting program for the Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 , which was also held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and was also intended to promote ice hockey .

The tournament name "Pond Hockey" comes from the English language and translates as "pond hockey" and describes playing on a frozen lake or pond .

Mode and control value

  • The tournament is divided into three classes - amateurs, professionals and celebrities.
  • Each team has to pay the so-called " Wayne-Gretzky " fee of 99 euros.
  • The playing field is 20 meters wide and 30 meters long.
  • It is played on two match days (Saturday and Sunday), with the preliminary rounds and the first knockout rounds being held on the first day of the tournament and the final rounds on the second day.
  • The game is played 2 × 10 minutes with four players each; in the event of a tie, another five minutes of overtime are played in sudden death mode. A maximum of six players per team may be entered per team. In addition, goalkeepers , slap shots and body checks are prohibited and only minimal equipment (ice hockey skates, helmet, elbow and shin guards, gloves) are allowed.
  • The gate is a small wooden box with two openings.
  • A face-off only exists at the beginning of a game.
  • It is played without offside and icing .
  • There are three points for a win, two points for a win in overtime . One point for both teams in the event of a draw after regular time. If no goal is scored in overtime, each team receives one point.

Held in 2011

At the 1st Pond Hockey Cup in February 2011, among others, the team of SC Riessersee took part in the professional class and former players of the German national team , who won the bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , took part in the celebrity category . Among them were Alois Schloder , Erich Kühnhackl and Franz Reindl . Other well-known participants were the Stanley Cup winners Uwe Krupp , Ernst Höfner and Klaus Merk and the celebrity team of the EHC Munich , consisting of EHC manager Christian Winkler and the coaches Pat Cortina , Joseph “Peppi” Heiß and Maurizio Mansi .

Around 4,000 spectators came to the 1st Pond Hockey Cup on both match days.

2012 edition

At the 2nd Pond Hockey Cup in February 2012, the unofficial Pond Hockey World Championship 2012 will be held. Teams from Italy , Hungary , Austria , Slovakia and Germany compete.

The following DEL teams are competing in the professional category in 2012 : EHC Munich , Eisbären Berlin , Iserlohn Roosters and Hannover Scorpions .

2013 edition

The 3rd Pond Hockey Cup took place on February 17th, 2013. Because of the bad weather in the run-up to the event, the tournament did not take place on the Rießersee for the first time, but on the open space of the Olympic Ice Sports Center .

The winners in the amateurs category were the first team of the old men of SC Riessersee and the Eisbären Allstars in the professionals category.

The audience was again around 4000 people.

Held in 2014

The 4th Pond Hockey Cup took place on February 8th and 9th. Due to the warm weather, the tournament had to be relocated to the open space of the Olympic Ice Sports Center, as in the previous year. Winner in the professional category was the SCR AH team , which prevailed against the Eisbären Berlin in the final . The DEL team won the amateurs category .
