Maurizio Mansi (born September 3, 1965 in Montréal , Québec ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey coach and former ice hockey player who was the head coach of the EHC Olten in the National League B (NLB) until January 2017 .
During his playing career he was active for the ESV Kaufbeuren and for the Düsseldorfer EG from the German Ice Hockey League and played in the Italian national team.
Player career
Mansi began his career in 1984 in the team of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , with which he was henceforth active in the US college league ECAC Hockey . In his first season at the Polytechnic Institute he and his team won the championship, the Whitelaw Cup and the ECAC league. In the final they defeated Harvard University in a best of three series with 3: 1. So you qualified for the NCAA championship . There, too, he was able to convince with the institute and in the end celebrated the championship after a 2-1 final victory over Providence College . In the same year he was also selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1985 by the Montréal Canadiens in the tenth round at a total of 195th position. Mansi then finished his studies and moved in the summer of 1988 to the American Hockey League for the Maine Mariners , the then farm team of the New Jersey Devils . There he could not assert himself, however, and was mainly used in the International Hockey League with the Flint Spirits .
Finally, during the 1989/90 season he decided to move to the highest Italian ice hockey league, Serie A , where he signed a contract with HC Pustertal . In the following years he played for AS Varese , among others , before he joined ESV Kaufbeuren from the German Ice Hockey League for the 1996/97 season. In Kaufbeuren , however, he did not make a breakthrough and so he left the club again in the middle of the following season. After he then played two games at SC Riessersee and played 23 times for EC VSV , he was drawn back to his long-term employer, in Serie A at HC Pustertal. There he ended the current season. In the summer of 1998, those responsible for the Düsseldorfer EG became aware of the left-handed shooter and transferred him to the 2nd Bundesliga . Two years later he rose to the German ice hockey league with DEG. Mansi left the club after another season in the DEL and was hired in Great Britain . In the end, he completed 149 games for Düsseldorf , in which he was able to achieve 97 points scorer. In Great Britain, the London Knights from the UK's top division, the Ice Hockey Superleague , signed him. Subsequent career stations were again AS Varese and HC Milano , where he ended his career in 2006 at the age of 40.
International
For Italy Mansi took part in numerous world championships as well as the 1994 Winter Olympics and the 1998 Winter Olympics from 1992 to 2002 . He played a total of 53 World Cup games in which the defender or winger scored 11 goals and 18 assists and spent 56 minutes in the penalty box. At the Winter Olympics, he was in eleven games in which Mansi posted two goals and two assists. He also received twelve penalty minutes.
Coaching career
From the 2008/09 season , Maurizio Mansi was active as assistant coach for the Hamburg Freezers from the German Ice Hockey League alongside the two Canadians Bill Stewart and Tom Hedican . His contract in Hamburg ran until 2009 and for the 2009/10 season Mansi signed a contract with SC Riessersee as head coach. As an assistant to Pat Cortina , he signed a one-year contract for the 2010/11 season with the newly promoted DEL EHC Munich . His contract was extended by one season each for the 2011/12 season and the 2012/13 season. For the 2013/14 season , he switched to the Nürnberg Ice Tigers as an assistant coach , where he supported head coach Tray Tuomie before he was dismissed there in December 2014. In January 2015, Mansi found another job at SC Riessersee, after Toni Krinner vacated the position of chief coach at his own request. After the 2014/15 season , however, his contract was not renewed as Tim Regan , who stormed for the SCR until the end of the 2014/15 season, took over the coaching position.
He has been working for the Spanish Ice Hockey Federation since 2012, where he was assistant coach of the national team at several tournaments. In May 2016 he was signed by EHC Olten from the Swiss National League B (NLB) as head coach. He was released on January 24, 2017 in Olten. At the time of the split, the ECHO was in fifth place in the NLB table. The club management justified Mansi's dismissal with "increasingly inadequate performance" of the team.
