In 1929 an association was founded for the first time under the name ESV Kaufbeuren , which, however, was dissolved again a few years later. Today's ESV Kaufbeuren was finally founded in 1946 by Georg Leitner junior, whereupon the first game took place at the Kaiserweiher near the Kaufbeuren swimming pool. In 1956, the construction of an artificial ice stadium began at the current location, into which the club moved in 1956 after advancing to the ice hockey league , the top division at the time . Two years later, the ESVK lost 0:32 against EC Bad Tölz , which is still the club's highest internal defeat, the highest-scoring game and the highest victory or defeat in the history of the highest German ice hockey leagues. This record has not yet been surpassed in the German Ice Hockey League .
After relegation from the newly founded Bundesliga in the following year , the direct resurgence and relegation in the Bundesliga in the following two years could be celebrated under the coach Xaver Unsinn in the 1960/61 season . The team's top performers were Alfred Lutzenberger and Manfred Hubner , who in 1966 became the first player from Kaufbeur to become top scorer in the Bundesliga with 26 goals. In 1967 , the ESVK finished fifth in the preliminary round, but only placed third in the relegation round and thus had to relegate to the top division again.

Two years later , he was promoted to the Bundesliga as a league champion, and the ice rink was converted into the current ice rink. In the same year, the attendance record of 7,000 spectators was set for a game against rival Augsburger EV . In the following years the team commuted repeatedly between the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga until the club was finally able to establish itself permanently in the ice hockey upper house in the 1980s. In the 1980/81 season , ESV Kaufbeuren moved into the newly created play-off round for the first time, where it failed in the quarter-finals, while striker Dieter Hegen was the top scorer with 54 goals. In 1984 the team with players like Vladimír Martinec , Bohuslav Šťastný and Hegen finally even reached the semi-finals and finally failed in the game for third place at the Mannheim ERC , as well as a year later at the Cologne EC . In the 1986/87 season , the club was leaders in the Bundesliga for a long time, but then slipped to fifth place and failed in the quarterfinals in four games against Mannheim.
In 1989 the ESVK rose to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time since 1979 after a weak season. The decisive last game against Krefelder EV was lost with 2: 3, a draw would have meant relegation. In 1990 promotion to the Bundesliga was only given up on the last day of the match, as the ESVK took the lead 4-1 against EHC Freiburg , but ultimately lost 4-5, while a draw would have been enough for promotion. The club finally achieved this in the 1990/91 season and belonged to the top division until it was dissolved in 1994 .
DEL and economic decline (1994 to 1998)
For the 1994/95 season , the outsourced professional team Kaufbeurer Adler was finally a founding member of the newly created German Ice Hockey League , in which they twice reach the play-off round of 16 and can secure relegation once in the play-downs . After only a few game days of the 1997/98 season, however, the Adler finally had to file for bankruptcy due to financial problems , whereupon the team was excluded from the game.

For the 1998/99 season , the first team of ESV Kaufbeuren continued the game operation in the fourth-class 2nd League South , after the license was granted shortly before the start of the season. As champions of the division, which has since been renamed Regional League , the team qualified for the Oberliga Süd in 2000 , and as runners-up, they returned to the 2nd Bundesliga after two years . In the following years the ESVK was able to secure relegation in the play-downs or the relegation round. In the summer of 2006, President Bernhard Pohl resigned after an internal power struggle with coach Peter Ustorf , and Kurt Dollhofer became the new chairman. In November, the contract with Ustorf was finally terminated after the previously promised successes failed to materialize. Then the former Kaufbeurer defender and national player Dieter Medicus , a member of the legendary defender formation "Kaufbeurer Stadtmauer", was appointed team boss.
Medicus resigned from his position in February 2007, whereupon he was replaced by Mike Bullard . After a 5-0 defeat in the seventh play-down game at ETC Crimmitschau , ESV Kaufbeuren finally rose in the same year to the league, where it finished fourth in the 2007/08 main round, but was already in the quarter-finals Dresdner Eislöwen failed and thus could not qualify for the DEB Cup in the next season. The Joker finished the preliminary round of the 2008/09 season with a third place and reached the play-off final, which was won with 3-1 games against EC Peiting . As champions of the Oberliga Süd, the ESVK qualified for the 2009/10 second division season . In the three following seasons, the ESV Kaufbeuren reached the play-offs despite one of the lowest budgets in the league, but were eliminated in 2010 and 2011 against the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the quarter-finals; In 2012 ESV Kaufbeuren lost to the later runner-up Starbulls Rosenheim in the quarter-finals. In the following seasons, the leap into the championship playoffs was no longer successful.
Renewed outsourcing of the 1st team to ESVK Spielbetriebs GmbH (from 2015)
On March 26, 2015, the extraordinary general meeting of the ESVK association decided to outsource the 1st team to ESVK Spielbetriebs GmbH , whose managing director Michael Kreitl was appointed.
Immediately after the end of the 2015/16 season, the ESVK announced the first contract extensions. At the end of July 2016, head coach Toni Krinner resigned for family reasons; Andreas Brockmann was appointed as his successor . In March 2017, goalkeeper Stefan Vajs received the DEL2 awards “Player of the Year” and “Goalkeeper of the Year” . At the beginning of April 2020 it was announced that the club was separating from head coach Brockmann. A few days later, Rob Pallin was introduced as the new head coach.

Venues
After the Second World War , ice hockey games were played in Kaufbeuren on the ice pond in the Jordan Park , and later also on a splashed meadow in the city pool and on the Kaiserweiher. With the promotion to the league in 1956, a new, careless artificial ice rink was built on the site of today's ice rink at Berliner Platz, which offered space for 5,000 to 6,000 spectators. In 1969 the covered ice rink was opened at Berliner Platz , which was last sponsored by the SparkassenArena and had a capacity of 4,600 seats.
Stadium closed from December 2012 to October 2013
On December 14, 2012, the club owned ice rink on Berliner Platz was surprisingly closed to all use by the city of Kaufbeuren. A routine structural analysis of the hangar's towing system anchored in concrete pylons in August 2012 revealed defects. The following laboratory tests of the core drilling of the roof-bearing pylons revealed high chloride values in the concrete, which are presumably due to an entry from the outside and endanger the statics of the hall. Due to the stadium closure, the club suffered a loss of income and high additional costs for stadium rents and trips to neighboring ice rinks. In a press release on December 21, 2012, the city of Kaufbeuren promised to contribute to expenses for travel expenses, supervisors and stadium rents in the non-profit area of the association's work. After completion of the renovation and renovation work, the venue was opened again in October 2013.
New building
The city council of Kaufbeuren decided on July 1, 2014 to build a new ice rink. In the decision of July 29, 2014, he decided on the "Parkstadion training grounds" location. The referendum: "Protect our city bag - no new professional ice rink" to reject the use of the new ice rink for professional ice hockey was rejected in the referendum on January 18, 2015. On February 24, 2015, with the city council resolution on the spatial program, the order for the preparation of the preliminary design for a stadium for max. 3,500 spectators (with up to 1,000 seats) granted. The contract went to the ASP architects from Stuttgart, which also worked at the reference stadium Eisstadion Weißwasser .
The construction and subsequent operation of the new stadium will be carried out by the new municipal company Eisstadion Kaufbeuren , to which the already concluded contracts have been transferred and whose losses are to be borne by the city of Kaufbeuren. The groundbreaking took place on April 6, 2016, and the opening took place on October 6, 2017.
