history

First groundbreaking on April 6, 2016

After the existing ice rink on Berliner Platz had to be closed for ten months for structural reasons, the Kaufbeuren city council decided on July 29, 2014 to build a new hall. However, this decision met with resistance from parts of the population, which is why a referendum was held on January 18, 2015. About 60 percent voted in favor of a profitable venue.

On November 1, 2014, the city of Kaufbeuren founded the municipal company Eisstadion Kaufbeuren AöR as sole sponsor , whose task is the construction and operation of the new ice rink. On July 21, 2015, the city council approved the preliminary design by the Stuttgart architects' office asp and the cost estimate of around 22.5 million euros.

Construction of the ice rink began with the first symbolic groundbreaking on April 6, 2016. The end of October of the year was the energy supplier Erdgas Schwaben for the next ten years namesake . The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on December 2, 2016 . Craftsmen, city and club representatives and around 500 visitors came together for the celebration in the finished shell.

On October 6, 2017, after a year and a half of construction, the arena was officially opened with an open house. One day later there was an ice revue with internationally successful figure skaters as well as regionally known music and dance clubs and a laser show. ESV Kaufbeuren had its first home game on October 8th, when it celebrated a 1-0 win against EHC Freiburg in front of a sold out house.

In the first season, the average attendance after the 26 home games of ESV Kaufbeuren was 2536 viewers per game. The occupancy rate was around 82%. In the subsequent play-offs, the arena was sold out throughout.

On April 11, 2019, a game by the German national ice hockey team took place for the first time in the Erdgas Schwaben Arena . As part of the Euro Hockey Challenge 2019 , Germany beat Slovakia 2-1. It was the first game of the German national team under the new coach Toni Söderholm .

use

In addition to the ESV Kaufbeuren games , the multifunctional arena can be used during the summer break for other sports, such as boxing or handball , but also for concerts . The opening of the Kaufbeurer Tänzelfest can also be celebrated there.
