The Jordan Park is about 2.7 hectares large English park in Kaufbeuren .

history

The park, which is now located between the train station, sports facilities and ice rink, was planned from 1878 by the previously founded horticulture and beautification association and laid out on a two-hectare property from 1881-1890 owned by the Heinzelmann dowry foundation and planted by the Kaufbeuren beautification association. The swampy lowland was then between the train station, built in 1854, and the city.

In the years 1891-1896 the park was expanded by one hectare in a north-westerly direction to what is now Johannes-Haag-Straße. In contrast to the south-western part, which is characterized by watercourses and ponds, generous, north-south oriented meadow valleys dominate here.

During the construction, the many springs were drawn into several ponds and a large number of streams. The name of the park goes back to the sources of the Jordan brook that rises there and is mentioned as medicinal as early as 1658 in the diary of the Kaufbeurer Crescentia monastery. Until the end of the 19th century, the spring water was used to supply the city with drinking water. In 1895, a high-pressure water pipeline for the city's water supply was completed, which replaced the 22 public wells and 150 water points in the city area. The executing construction company Philipp Holzmann AG built a large fountain for part of the unused construction costs, which was opened in 1895 with a "Sedan Festival" with a large participation of the population. In 1891 swans were settled, and a year later an ice rink was built, which was electrically illuminated from 1893.

Monopteros

In 1896 Wilhelm Schweyer donated a Monopteros , which was not built until 1910.

Until the Second World War, the Jordan Park was also known as "Hindenburg Park".

After the Second World War, the ESV Kaufbeuren temporarily used the ice pond in the Jordan Park as a venue. In 1956, the ice rink on Berliner Platz was built on the edge of the park , and in the course of construction, the drainage of the Jordan brook was relocated from the park.

In 1987 the park was renovated for around 650,000 euros.

Wonder circle

In 2002 the Wunderkreis was created, a lawn labyrinth with 11 entrances, which is modeled on the "Wunderkreis" existing in the Kaufbeurer Tänzelhölzle from 1846 to 1937. The labyrinth in the shape of a Baltic wheel has 60 cm wide paths, the strip of lawn measures 30 cm. The total diameter is 20.85 m, the path to the center is 377 m long.

Todays use

Today the park with its ponds, watercourses, bridges, a playground and a stock of trees that mostly originate from the founding period is used as an urban recreational area, and increasingly for larger events in the summer months.
