The Echte Helden Arena , originally and in parlance also Franz-Siegel-Halle , is an ice rink in the Mooswald district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau . It is the home of the traditional German ice hockey club EHC Freiburg from the DEL2 .

history

Last visit of the German national ice hockey team : game against Russia in the Euro Hockey Challenge 2012 , at that time with a spectator capacity of 4000.

Until 2019, the hall was named after Franz Siegel, the former President of the ERC Freiburg , under whose leadership it was built in the late 1960s. The stadium was initially open, but was covered in the 1970s.

The stadium originally held 5800 visitors and was temporarily the fourth largest ice hockey stadium in Baden-Württemberg after the Mannheim SAP Arena , the Mannheim ice stadium at Friedrichspark and the Schwenninger Helios Arena . Since the stadium is oriented towards standing places, there were a total of 4600 standing places and 1200 seats. Despite the higher capacity, only 5,200 tickets went on sale because many of the standing spaces were obstructed.

The hall has hosted international matches for the German national ice hockey team on several occasions . In 1994 the legendary friendly game between the EHC Selects, a fan-chosen team of current and former EHC players, and a selection of players from the US professional league NHL took place here. Wayne Gretzky and other big names played here in front of a sold out house and defeated the EHC Selects 8: 5.

In March 2009, the Badische Zeitung reported on an expert report that described the Franz-Siegel-Halle as a renovation case. Accompanied by the masses of snow on the roof of the hall, a second division ice hockey league game was threatened to be canceled in February 2009. Because of this, it was decided to secure the statics and fire protection through renovation measures for an estimated 2.6 million euros. Since the execution of the renovation work was only to be seen as a temporary measure for five years - until the completion of a new hall - the amount of the costs was discussed controversially. According to the head of the club at the time, Wolfgang Kunkler, the roof structure of the hall is not a listed building, as is often claimed.

In February 2013, the Freiburg municipal council decided to build a new stadium for ice sports in Freiburg. Location and exact execution have yet to be decided. A site proposal should be in place by July 2014, but it has not yet been possible to commit due to the high costs. In August 2014 it was announced that the operating license for the hall would be Template: future / in 4 yearsextended for a further ten years for the time being . This approval is valid until at least 2020. Various small improvements to the security of the hall were necessary and the total capacity of the hall was limited to 3500 seats.

On September 10, 2019, the immediate renaming of the Franz-Siegel-Halle to Echte Helden Arena was announced. The sponsor AHP Merkle, who acquired the naming rights, decided together with the association and the city to rename it in order to support the sponsoring initiative Echte Helden in favor of the children's and youth clinic in Freiburg, which is currently under construction.
