While he was active as a player in the major league for EC Bad Tölz , he also worked as a youth coach at his home club from 1970 onwards. In 1978 he took over the coaching position at TEV Miesbach from the league, which he looked after until 1980. He then returned to his hometown club and became its head coach. Until 1982 he was in charge of the men's team, which was playing in the 2nd Bundesliga at the time. In 1981 he also received an honorary coaching position from the German Ice Hockey Association for its junior national teams. He held this position until 1988.
In 1982 Kathan returned to TEV Miesbach for two years. He occupied a lower place in the table with the TEV in the 1982/83 season, he reached third place with the team in the Oberliga Süd in the following season and thus qualified for the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga . In this, the TEV failed with only one win out of ten games. In the summer of 1984 he received another offer to become head coach of the EC Bad Tölz and accepted it. With the EC he finished fourth in the group south in the 1984/85 season and thus qualified for promotion relegation, in which, however, only 2 wins in 18 games. In the following season, EC Bad Tölz finished second in the group south after the preliminary round, but failed again in the relegation.
In 1987 Kathan accepted a contract offer from TuS Geretsried and was in charge of the first men's team to compete in the league until the relegation round in 1989/90. Under the leadership of Peter Kathan the TuS mostly reached middle table positions. After his contract expired, Kathan returned to Bad Toelz and was head coach of the second division team for the following three seasons. At the end of the 1991/92 season , the EC rose to the league, as the number of teams in the second division was reduced and the EC Bad Tölz could not qualify for the new, single-track league.
In 1993 Kathan was appointed head coach of ESV Kaufbeuren and competed with him in the Bundesliga and the German ice hockey league founded in 1994 . This was followed by two more years as head coach of EC Bad Tölz, two seasons at ESC Munich , which was applied for in the Bayernliga and regional league, and a season at EHC Bad Aibling from the Oberliga, where he also coached his younger son Peter. From April 2000 Kathan looked after the SC Riessersee from the 2nd Bundesliga, but was dismissed in December 2001 after 20 games without a win.
Peter Kathan has an A- trainer license and completed further training as a certified trainer at the Cologne Trainer Academy . In February 2002 he was introduced as the new coach of the Erding Jets for the 2002/03 season. In June 2002 Kathan received the offer to become head coach of the German national ice hockey team for women and left the jets again.
With the women's national team, he took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics and took fifth place. The best world championship ranking since he took office came in 2005 , when the German women also finished fifth under Kathan's leadership. At the World Cup of Division I in 2011 , he managed to return to the top division with the national team after the women were relegated from the top group in 2008 due to the worse goal difference.
