Nikolaus "Klaus" Kathan (born January 7, 1977 in Bad Tölz ) is a former German ice hockey player . He is the son of the ice hockey legend and national coach of the German women's ice hockey team Peter Kathan senior . His brother Peter is also a hockey player.

Career

Klaus Kathan learned ice hockey at EC Bad Tölz, which is based in his hometown . There the center was in the 1994/95 season for the first time in the squad of the senior team, with which he played from then on in the 1st League South . In the following three years, in which he went on the ice for Bad Tölz, the right-shooter completed 103 league games in which he was able to achieve 80 points scorer . During the current 1996/97 season , the attacker moved to the Berlin Capitals in the German Ice Hockey League , where he was now part of the regular squad and was able to reach the play-offs with his new employer. In the play-off semifinals, his team lost 3-1 games against local rivals Eisbären Berlin , where the then 20-year-old played in all four games and scored two goals.

Kathan then stormed for the Starbulls Rosenheim for two years and, after a two-year stopover at the Kassel Huskies, switched to the Adler Mannheim , where, however, some injuries threw him back. In the first season for the Adler, the striker broke his wrist, in the second season a meningitis prevented him from playing in the DEL. Accordingly, Kathan's point yield in both seasons was also low: the attacker could only score 4 hits.

For the 2004/05 season , Kathan moved within the league to the DEG Metro Stars , where he was able to build on earlier successes. In his first season at DEG, the striker scored 20 goals and prepared eight more goals in 52 games, a year later he had 28 goals and 20 assists in 52 games. On February 26, 2006 right-handed shooter scored the decisive goal to 2-1 in the extension of the cup final against Adler Mannheim , which gave the Metro Stars their first title since the 1996 championship. In addition to winning the DEB Cup, the native Bavarian was able to move into the play-off final of 2006 with his team. After a 4-2 win in a best-of-seven series against the Hamburg Freezers and a 3-2 win in a best-of-five round against the Rhineland rivals Kölner Haie, his team lost 0 in the final: 3 games against the Eisbären Berlin .

At the end of the 2007/08 season , his contract with DEG was not extended, so he signed a contract with league competitor Hannover Scorpions . At the Lower Saxony, the attacker met his long-term strike partner Tore Vikingstad , with whom he had already been active in a series of storms for four years at the Düsseldorfer EG. In the 2009/10 season Kathan was German champion with the Hannover Scorpions. For the 2011/2012 season he switched to league competitor EHC Munich and in October 2012 he was the fourth player in the history of the DEL to play the 900th game of his career.

In the summer of 2013 Kathan returned to his hometown club EC Bad Tölz and with this in 2017 he was promoted from the league to the DEL2 . He ended his career after the 2017/18 season.

International

Kathan's greatest sporting experience was participating in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and 2006 in Turin . There he wore the jersey of the German national team twelve times and scored five points. The attacker previously took part in a total of eleven world championships with the German team between 1994 and 2005 . His greatest successes were reaching the quarter-finals at the World Cup in 2001 , 2002 and 2003 .
