Rainer Nittel (born March 19, 1967 in Bonn ) is a former German ice hockey player and coach who was the national coach of the German women's ice hockey team between 1995 and 2002 .

Career

As an active player, Nittel was active for the 1st Hennef EC in the Oberliga and TSV Adendorf in the Regionalliga. In the 1989/90 season he looked after the juniors of the Hennef EC as an assistant trainer, before he worked as a trainer in the youth division of the Cologne EC from 1990 . In 1992 he became the head coach of the women's team at Hennef EC, which was then part of the women's Bundesliga. From December 1992 he coached the club's first men's team to take part in the major league .

Between 1993 and 1994 Nittel was employed as a trainer at various training camps before he became the NRW regional trainer for the U20 juniors in 1994. In addition, he was in charge of the male U14 selection of the NRW regional association. At the same time, he held the position of competitive sports officer for the regional association.

In 1995 Nittel took over the office of the national women's coach and took part in three world championships and one European championship. The best placement was fifth place at the 2001 World Cup . He also led the national team in 2002 for their first participation in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In this tournament, the German selection took sixth place.

Subsequently, from 2002 to 2004, Nittel worked as a consultant in the field of competitive sports for the German Sports Association, in order to take over the position of sports director of the German Curling Association in 2004 . During this time, the German curling men were very successful internationally and became European champions in 2004, bronze medalists in 2005 and silver medalists in 2007.

In 2007, Nittel moved to the German Hockey Association as board member of competitive sports and sports director and was also responsible as team leader at the Olympic Games in Beijing . During this time he succeeded in reorganizing the competitive sports area in the German Hockey Federation, which had become necessary due to the departure of long-time head coach Bernhard Peters .

After four years, Rainer Nittel returned to the German Curling Association in April 2011 as sports director and board member for competitive sports. In 2013 he was Secretary General of the Olympic qualification tournament in Füssen, which was held for the first time worldwide, and later played a major role in the fact that the curlers remained in the top-class sport funding of the German Olympic Sports Confederation despite an initially decided exclusion. From 2015 to 2017 he was managing director of the Erholungs- und Sportzentrum Winterberg GmbH (Veltins-EisArena) and was responsible, among other things, for the successful implementation of the World Cups in bobsleigh / skeleton and luge.
