The Rießersee or Rießer See is located south of Garmisch at 785  m above sea level. NHN in the Wetterstein Mountains . It was artificially created in a forest clearing in the Middle Ages . A hillside spring on the south-east bank provides the water supply.

A circular path leads around the lake. There is a small bathing establishment on the southeast side . The current water quality is good, all guide values ​​are adhered to.

In the past, many ice sports competitions were held on the Rießersee, such as speed skating and ice hockey at the Olympic Games in 1936. The lake was first known for the legendary Olympic bobsleigh run from 1936, which was laid out in 1909 and is now a listed building . From 1910 onwards, numerous races were held here - on one of the most dangerous tracks in the world. The target curve of the historic natural bobsleigh run is in the southwest of the lake. Only a few hundred meters from the lake is the "Bobschuppen" with numerous historical exhibits and original film material. In winter, the frozen lake is still used for ice skating and curling. In 2011 and 2012, the Pond Hockey Cup was held on the Rießersee .

The lake is also the namesake of the traditional winter sports club and ice hockey club SC Riessersee , which used to play its games on the frozen lake. Ice hockey games and speed skating competitions were also held on the lake as part of the 1936 Winter Olympics .
