Mogel Motte is a card game that was released in 2011 by Drei Magier Spiele . The game was developed by Emely and Lukas Brand, the 11 and 9 year old children of the game designer couple Inka and Markus Brand . It received the German Children's Games Prize in 2012 and was included in the recommendation list for Children's Games of the Year 2012. With the game Schummel Hummel a successor to the game was released in 2017.

Style of play

The basic game of Mogel Motte corresponds to various discarding games such as Mau Mau or Uno , in which the aim is to put all the cards in your hand on a discard pile. The specialty of Mogel Motte , however, is that cheating is explicitly provided for in the game. The game material consists of a deck of cards with a total of 72 cards. Of these, 43 are number cards, 20 action cards (5 each with a spider, a mosquito, a cockroach and an ant), 8 cheat moths and one the guardian bug.

Game flow

At the beginning of the game, the oldest player receives the Guardian Bug and places it in front of him. All other cards are shuffled and each player receives eight cards face down, the remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the game. The top card is removed and placed face up next to the pile. If this is an action card, only the card value counts.

Starting with the first player who has the guard bug, the players can now take turns to put cards on the discard pile. The discarded card must always be exactly one number higher or lower than the top card on the discard pile. Exceptions are the cards with the 1 and the 5, whereby a 2 or a 5 can be placed on the 1 and a 4 or a 1 can be placed on the 5. If a player cannot discard a suitable card, he must draw a card from the draw pile, but then cannot discard any more cards. If the draw pile is empty, the discard pile is shuffled and discarded as a new draw pile. During the entire game, all players, with the exception of the player with the guard bug, are allowed to cheat and to make cards disappear as inconspicuously as possible. However, the hand of cards must always be held over the table and only one card may be cheated away at a time, the last card in hand may never be cheated away. If a player has been caught cheating, cheating may not be carried out during the time of clarification.

The task of the player who owns the guard bug is to watch other players and to catch them cheating. If he catches a teammate cheating, he shouts “Caught!” And it is clarified whether this player has actually just cheated. If this is the case, the player has to take the card he wanted to cheat back into hand and receives one of his hand cards from the guard, he also receives the guard bug and is the new guard. If a player is wrongly accused, the guard has to draw a penalty card from the draw pile and remains the guard.

There are 20 action cards in the game with four different motifs and a total of eight cards with a cheat moth. These have different functions:

map function
Cheat moth Cannot be stored or given away and counts 10 minus points at the end of the game, so you should cheat it away quickly. Only the player with the Guardian Bug can put a Cheat Moth on the discard pile.
spider If you play a spider, you may give away one of your hand cards (but not a cheat moth) to another player of your choice.
mosquito As soon as a mosquito is played, everyone except the active player must hit the card with the palm of their hand as quickly as possible. The slowest player receives a hand card (but not a cheat moth) from each player.
cockroach When a cockroach is played, all players try to place any number card with the same value on it at the same time. The fastest player can leave his card.
ant When an ant is played, all players except the active player draw a card from the discard pile.

The game ends when a player has no more cards in hand and has been able to discard his last card. This player has won the round, for all other players the minus points are evaluated using the cards in hand. Each number card is one minus point, action cards are worth 5 minus points and a cheat moth is worth 10 minus points. In the next round the player becomes the new starting player alongside the starting player of the last round.
