Memoarrr! is a card game by the game designer Carlo Bartolini , published by Edition Spielwiese in 2017 and distributed by Pegasus Spiele . It is a known game to the memory system modeled memory game after Pairs principle, in which the players have to remember the position of cards on the table.

In June 2018, Memoarrr! added to the recommendation list for the game of the year 2018. In addition, the game was awarded the German Children's Game Prize 2018.

Theme and gameplay

The gameplay of Memoarrr! builds on the well-known game Memory . As with this, the players have to note the position of cards in a card display and reveal them appropriately. Unlike Memory, all cards are unique and consist of a combination of one of five landscapes and one of five animals (members of a pirate team). In addition, each player reveals only one card per turn, which must match the card revealed by the previous one in one of the two properties. If a player does not succeed in this, he is eliminated and only the last remaining player in a round receives a reward in the form of gems. The winner is the player who has the most gems after seven rounds.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 25 location cards, each showing an animal and a landscape,
  • 7 treasure cards with one to four rubies,
  • 3 volcano maps with different numbers of birds,
  • game setup information and four overview cards with the short game rules.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, the 25 location cards for an island are laid out face down in the middle of the table in a grid of five by five cards. The central location is removed unseen and taken out of the game; the shuffled treasure cards and the volcanoes (one less than fellow players) are placed face down in this location. At the beginning, each player is assigned a coastline of the island and may look at the middle three cards on this side and put them back.

Game flow

Starting with a starting player, the players now reveal one card one after the other. The starting player starts with any card except one of those he has already looked at. All subsequent players must then each reveal a card that matches the previously revealed card either in the landscape or in the animal shown and is therefore “connected to it”. If a player does not succeed in this, he is eliminated from the round and receives the top volcano card. The next player must now turn over a card that is linked to the card of the eliminated player. When all 24 cards are revealed, although several players are still playing, the one who cannot reveal any more cards must take a volcano card. When all volcano cards have been distributed, the last remaining player receives a treasure card.

For the next round, all face-up cards are turned over again and remain in their position. The starting player of the new round is the player with the volcano on which most of the birds are depicted. The game ends after seven rounds with the award of the last treasure card; the winner is the player with the most rubies.

Ordered treasure maps

As a variant, Memoarrr! can also be played with organized treasure maps in order to better plan the course. For this, the most valuable treasure map with four rubies is placed at the bottom, then the other treasures with decreasing number of rubies are placed. In this way, the winner of the first round always gets one ruby, after which the number increases until the last round.

Expert rules

In the expert rules of Memoarrr! The various team members are assigned special abilities that they can use when they are revealed:

Crew member ability
penguin After revealing a penguin, the player may look at any card that is still face down.
Octopus After revealing an octopus, the player may swap the position of the octopus with that of any horizontally or vertically lying card.
walrus After revealing a walrus, the player may block any card for the following player by tapping on it.
crab After revealing a crab, the player must play another turn.
turtle Nothing happens after a turtle is uncovered.
