Started out as a fantasy store

Pegasus Spiele Verlags- und Medienvertriebsgesellschaft mbH was founded on April 4, 1993 by its two managing directors and owners Karsten Esser and Andreas Finkernagel as a shop for fantasy games in Friedberg in a former craft business for window technology that Finkernagel's father ran. Esser and Finkernagel also founded the fantasy club "The Community of the Ring" with the magazine "Ringbote" as the club magazine.

In 1994, she expanded the store to a publisher and published the first German translation of the RPG system GURPS under license from Steve Jackson Games by Steve Jackson . With the success of trading card games to Magic: The Gathering Pegasus also released the also developed by Steve Jackson Illuminati. New World Order , which became the third German-speaking trading card game after Magic: The Gathering and Dark Force . In the same year Pegasus had its first trade fair appearance at the international game days SPIEL in Essen. In 1995 the 1st German "Magic: The Gathering" championship took place in Friedberg with 512 participants. and from 1996 through Steve Jackson and Wizards of the Coast, the publisher became one of five German wholesalers for Magic: The Gathering . Pegasus also added the game systems Midgard , the oldest German role-playing game , and Call of Cthulhu , a role-playing game in the worlds of HP Lovecraft , to its program. In the card game area, Pegasus initially published mainly games from the fantasy sector as well as many German translations from well-known English-language publishers. Since 2003, Pegasus has also been selling the satirical card game series Munchkin, also developed by Steve Jackson, with numerous offshoots.

Expansion of the publishing business

At the same time as the role and trading card games, Pegasus developed its board game business and, in 1997, was the first board game to launch a German-language version of the game Kings and Things by Tom Wham , which was produced on the machines of the Kosmos-Verlag . In 1998, after a reorganization at Wizards of the Coast, Pegasus lost the license for Magic: The Gathering . Instead of downsizing, the publishing house expanded and expanded the range from a few hundred to over 10,000 items. He built up his own game team, which, with Mondo and Pictomania, also deliberately expanded to include family games. In 2012, Pegasus was again licensed to distribute Magic: The Gathering and continues to distribute it to this day. According to the company itself, more than 5,000 games and toys have already been sold at Pegasus. A network of 300 voluntary game explainers supports the publisher in making its products known in German-speaking Europe at trade fairs and events. 30 employees, including numerous freelancers, work for the publisher.

In 2009, Matt Leacock's cooperative board game Pandemie (2009) was nominated for Game of the Year , followed by further nominations for Im Wandel der Zeiten - Das Würfelspiel: Bronzezeit (2010) and Strasbourg for the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2011, which makes the company stand out not only as a distributor, but also as a publisher of board games.
