Zombies !!! is a horror - board game of Todd Breitenstein , which was published in 2001 in English. It has been published in German by Pegasus Spiele since 2005 .

Game description and content

A city is overrun by zombies , the only way for the few survivors to escape is a helicopter. The players' task is to be the first to get their character past the zombie hordes to the helipad and thus to safety or, alternatively, to be the first to kill 25 zombies.

The components of the basic game include 30 city map cards (each divided into 9 fields), 50 event cards, 6 game figures, 100 zombie figures, 30 life markers, 60 ammunition markers and 2 dice. The expansions add additional material to the basic game, such as new figures, city map parts or event cards.

Game flow

At the beginning each player receives a pawn , three life and ammunition markers and three event cards in hand. The city center is laid out openly, from where the game pieces start. The rest of the city is only formed in the course of the game by laying out new city map parts, similar to Carcassonne . To do this, the city map cards without a helipad are shuffled and made available as a face-down pile; the rescue helipad is placed under the pile.

The game is played in turn. When it is a player's turn, he takes a city map and places it next to the city previously on display. With each new district, more zombie characters come into play. Some city cards also contain special buildings where the player can loot new ammunition and life tokens. In the further course of the turn, the playing figure is moved a number of spaces and has to fight against zombies. The battles are also rolled, whereby the ammunition markers can be used to improve a bad roll. The life markers represent the remaining life force of the character: if a player loses all life markers, his character “dies” and starts again in the city center; the player must also surrender all weapon cards and half of his defeated zombie figures. At the end of his turn, a player always moves a rolled number on any zombies and can, for example, clear his own way for his character or encircle other characters.

The event cards sometimes have a decisive effect on the game: some modify the combat or movement value of their own figure, others give additional ammunition or life tokens, create new zombies or hinder the figure of another player. A player can play or discard one event card per round; the hand of cards is always added to three.

The game ends when a character reaches the helicopter landing pad and freed it from zombies or a player has collected 25 zombie characters.

history

Todd Breitenstein worked for the Journeyman Press division of the United States Playing Card Company when he developed his game and then published it in 2001 in English at Journeyman Press. Shortly after publication, Journeyman Press was disbanded and Todd and his wife Kerry Breitenstein bought the rights to Zombies !!! at the parent company United States Playing Card Company and on January 20, 2002 founded the game publisher Twilight Creations around Zombies !!! To bring out expansions and other horror and party games.

In the meantime, Twilight Creations released ten expansions, with Zombies !!! 4 and zombies !!! 11 can be played independently. In 2006 a revised version with changed rules and new artwork appeared as a second edition . The German version appeared in 2005, the revised Second Edition in 2009 at Pegasus Spiele. Edge Entertainment released a Spanish and a French version.

In January 2014, a campaign for Part 13, The Zombies !!! was launched on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.com. 13: DEFCON Z will be called. This will be the first part in which users and fans can contribute their own content. The planned release date is September 2014.
