Black Stories , often also spelled black stories , is a card game series by Holger Bösch with collections of tricky and morbid stories. The aim of the game is to use the short descriptive text of a story to guess what the general conditions and circumstances are that led to the situation described. To this end, the other players are allowed to ask the game master questions, which he can only answer with “yes” or “no”. The idea corresponds to that of lateral puzzles. The Black Stories are therefore often known as "laterals" or "yes-no puzzles".

Game flow

The 50 playing cards are placed face up on the table as a stack. The master is determined. He takes the top card of the pile and reads the front, the scene, out loud and asks: “Why do you think?” Then he reads through the answer on the back of the card, but keeps it to himself.

Now the remaining players can ask the master questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no”. So they work their way up to the solution bit by bit until they finally found out the black story that ended in this scene. The following applies here, ...

  • that the players are only allowed to ask questions that can in principle be answered with “yes” or “no”. For example, the following would not be allowed: “How tall was the man?” With such questions, the master must insist on a new formulation.
  • that players must not make unfounded assumptions. For example, you are not allowed to ask “Was the knife sharp?” If the course of the game does not show that there is a knife in the story. In such a case, the master advises the counselors that this assumption has nothing to do with the story or that this assumption is unfounded at this point in time.
  • that the answer on the back of the playing card is the only correct answer.

In addition to this “classic” way of playing, in which the group wins together, Black Stories can also be played “competitively”. The guessing group does not guess together, but each player in turn asks until the master answers "No". Whoever has found the most solutions at the end wins the game.
