Count Philipp Félix Balthasar Otto Ghislain von Mérode , short Félix de Mérode (born April 13, 1791 in Maastricht , † February 7, 1857 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician .

Life

His parents were Count Karl Wilhelm von Merode-Westerlo (* September 16, 1762; † February 18, 1830) and his wife Maria-Josepha d'Ongnies de Mastaing (* September 20, 1760; † August 4, 1842). His father was mayor of Brussels at the time of Napoleon .

During the Belgian Revolution (in which a brother was killed) he became a member of the provisional government and was brought into play by the Catholic side as a candidate for the royal throne of the new state, which he refused. Instead, he supported the election of Prince Leopold as the new king. After independence he became a minister, initially without portfolio , then for a short time minister of war and later minister of foreign and finance. In 1839 he retired into private life, but from 1842 promoted a Belgian colonization attempt in Guatemala together with the German Count Theophil von Hompesch .

He married the Countess Rosalie de Grammont (born February 9, 1792, † September 28, 1823). The couple had several children:

After the death of his first wife, he married Philippine de Grammont on September 27, 1831 (* August 15, 1800, † May 3, 1847). The couple had a daughter:
