Theophil von Hompesch

Count Theophil von Hompesch , Théophile Antoine Guillaume de Hompesch, (born March 11, 1800 in Rurich Castle near Jülich; † March 31, 1853 in Clichy ) was a member of the German-born noble family Hompesch and a Belgian entrepreneur.

He was the middle of the five sons of Count Johann Baptist Ludwig von Hompesch auf Rurich (1759-1833) and his wife Theresia Angelika von Arschot-Schoonhoven. The son of his older brother, Count Hermann Philipp von Hompesch-Rurich, was the Prussian politician Alfred Polycarp von Hompesch .

Since January 8, 1828 he was married to Baroness Johanne (Jeannette) von Overschie-Wisbeck (* February 21, 1807).

In parallel to his campaign for the construction of a Nicaragua Canal , he tried to found a Belgian colony in Guatemala from 1842 as Vice President of the Compagnie Belge de Colonization together with the Belgian politician Félix de Mérode . In the process he lost his fortune and eventually died in the debt prison .
