Nicolas Bratza
Sir Nicolas Dušan Bratza (born March 3, 1945 in Cheam ) is a British lawyer of Serbian descent. From November 1, 1998 to October 31, 2012, he was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights for the United Kingdom. He served as President of the Court of Justice from November 4, 2011 to October 31, 2012.
Life
Nicolas Bratza was the son of Milan Bratza, a Serbian concert violinist. His parents settled in London after the First World War . His mother comes from the Russell family, which among others had produced a Lord Chief Justice with Charles Russell . Nicolas went to school at Wimbledon College, a state Jesuit school. He studied law at Brasenose College . After receiving his bachelor's degree , he taught at the University of Pennsylvania for two years . In 1969 he was admitted to the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association .
In 1988 he was appointed Crown Attorney . He was appointed Crown Court judge in 1993. In the same year he was appointed to the European Commission for Human Rights as representative of the United Kingdom . In 1998 the tasks of the Commission were taken over by the European Court of Human Rights. Bratza was elected to represent the United Kingdom before the Tribunal. He took office on November 1, 1998. However, the criterion for this election was that he held a judge's office in his home state. For this purpose he was appointed judge on the High Court of Justice in his homeland. Also in 1998 and again in 2001 he was elected as a section chairman. On March 5, 1999, he was beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree and has held the title of "Sir" since then. In 2004 he was re-elected both as a member for the UK and as Section Chair. As of January 19, 2007, he was one of the two Vice-Presidents of the Court. On July 4, 2011, Bratza was elected President of the Court. He took up this position on November 4, 2011. His term of office ended on October 31, 2012.
Awards
In June 2007 he received from the University of Glasgow , the honorary doctorate .
