Life
The son of a factory owner completed his law studies at the University of Oslo in 1939 with the degree of cand.jur. After working for a year as an assistant lawyer in Oslo, in 1940 he took over the post of judge at the court of first instance responsible for the districts of Eiker , Modum and Sigdal . He then served from 1941 to 1943 as an advisor in the legal department of the Ministry of Budget. During the Second World War he worked with the resistance against the German occupiers, which led to his arrest in December 1943. After the liberation of Norway by the Allies, he was released from prison.
Between 1945 and 1948 he held the office of public prosecutor, from 1948 to 1950 he was the prosecutor at the Norwegian Supreme Court in charge of treason cases. Ryssdal was also admitted to the bar in 1948, which is why he practiced as a freelance lawyer in Oslo until 1956. In addition, a research grant brought him back to his alma mater in Oslo in 1947. He completed this in 1952. In 1956 he went to the Ministry of Justice and Police as Secretary General . From 1964 to 1984 he was a judge at the Norwegian Supreme Court, from 1969 as its president.
Ryssdal was a member of numerous committees. In 1949 he was appointed to a committee that should work out proposals for reforming Norwegian criminal law. From 1965 he held its chairmanship and did not leave the committee until 1981.
In 1973 he was elected to the European Court of Human Rights as the Norwegian representative . There he rose to Vice-President in 1981, and in 1985 he was appointed President of the Court of Justice. During his tenure, the number of complaints received increased significantly, which also increased the influence of the ECHR. He did not live to see the entry into force of the 11th Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights and the associated transformation of the ECHR into a permanent court: he died eight months before the end of his term in office in February 1998.
He was married to the politician and lawyer Signe Marie Stray Ryssdal .
