Herbert Petzold (lawyer)

Herbert Petzold (* 1935 ) is a German legal scholar. He was Chancellor of the European Court of Human Rights .

After studying law in Göttingen , Berlin , Paris and Strasbourg , he received his doctorate in 1966 at the Law Faculty of the University of Göttingen to Doctor 's rights with a thesis on "The separation of powers in the European Communities". In 1975 he was first elected Vice Chancellor of the European Court of Human Rights and was confirmed in this office in 1982 and 1989. In 1994 he was elected Chancellor of the Court of Justice. After his retirement due to age on October 31, 1998, Petzold worked for some time as Conseiller spécial of the President of the Court of Justice in the implementation of the 11th Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights .

As a part-time job, Petzold teaches at numerous domestic and foreign universities in the field of international law , in particular international human rights protection. Among other things, he is an honorary professor at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken and a lecturer at the German University for Administrative Sciences in Speyer (awarded the university medal in 2001 ).

Petzold published numerous scientific articles on international human rights protection, especially in the Neue Juristische Wochenschrift . In Germany he is considered to be one of the most profound experts on the law of the European Convention on Human Rights .
