Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos

Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos ( Greek Λινός-Αλεξάντερ Σικυλιανός , also Linos-Alexander Sicilianos or Linos-Alexandros Sisilianos , born May 9, 1960 in Athens ) is a Greek lawyer, professor at the University of Athens and former judge at the European Court of Human Rights . Sicilianos was President of the ECHR from May 5, 2019 to May 17, 2020.

Live and act

Sicilianos studied law at the University of Athens , where he obtained his law degree in 1983. In 1984 he obtained a master's degree in international law from the University of Strasbourg . In 1990 he also received his doctorate in Strasbourg. iur. He then worked as a lawyer before the Areopagus and the highest Greek administrative court. He was later appointed to the Chair of International Law by the University of Athens, which he has held since then. From 1997 to 2009 he was a member of the Council of Europe's Expert Commission for the Improvement of Procedures for the Protection of Human Rights (DH-PR), from 2002 to 2009 he was also a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) . He was also involved in several committees in Greece and the European Union on human rights issues.

At the beginning of 2011, Sicilianos was elected as the successor to Christos Rozakis as representative of Greece as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights . He took office on May 18, 2011. On February 1, 2017, he became President of Section I of the ECHR, and on May 1, 2017, he was also Vice-President of the Court of Justice. On April 1, 2019, Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos was elected as the new President of the Court by the judges of the ECHR. He took up the office of ECHR President on May 5, 2019 as the successor to Guido Raimondi . He was a judge and president of the European Court of Human Rights until May 17, 2020, before leaving the Court of Justice when his term of office expired.

Sicilianos is the son of the composer George Sicilianos .
