Hooverphonic
Hooverphonic is a Belgian trip-hop band that has existed since 1995 .
history
The band originally called themselves Hoover , but changed their name due to the existence of several other bands of the same name and to avoid confusion with the vacuum cleaner company Hoover .
She got a record deal with Sony Music and released her debut album A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular in 1996 with Liesje Sadonius (vocals), Frank Duchêne (keyboard), Alex Callier (guitar, programming) and Raymond Geerts (guitar). The song 2 Wicky was used in the soundtrack to the film Feeling and Seduction by Bernardo Bertolucci and in the soundtrack to the film I Know What You Did Last Summer . In 1997 they toured Europe (supporting act by Beth Orton ) and the USA (supporting act by Fiona Apple ).
The second album Blue Wonder Power Milk was recorded after Sadonius left the band in 1998 with Geike Arnaert as the new singer. The song Renaissance affair was used in the commercial for the VW Beetle . After the release of this album, Frank Duchêne also left the band.
The song Visions (released on the bonus CD of their third album The Magnificent Tree ) was played at the opening ceremony of the 2000 European Football Championship in Belgium. In 2001 they headlined the Rock Werchter music festival .
In 2002 the band recorded the concept album Hooverphonic presents Jackie Cane , which describes the rise and fall of the fictional singer Jackie Cane.
In 2003 the band recorded a live album with an orchestra in a theater hall (exception: 2 new studio tracks) , but unusually without an audience. The album was released under the name Sit down and listen to Hooverphonic: The live Theater Recordings . The song The last thing I need is you was released as a single.
In August 2005 the first single Wake Up was released , in November the second single You hurt me! from the new album in Belgium. Also in November the album was released in Belgium, in the rest of Europe it was released in January 2006. This time the band released two versions of the album, More Sweet Music , with classical instruments and No More Sweet Music , which has the same songs contains in electronic versions. Because the band was dissatisfied with the promotion and especially the distribution problems of the album outside of Belgium, the contract with Warner Music was not continued. The band's continued existence with another label was also not confirmed.
The album The President of the LSD Golf Club was released in Belgium in autumn 2007 on the Tracks label, in other countries it was released in March 2008.
Singer Geike Arnaert left the band at the end of 2008, whereupon the two remaining band members looked for a new singer via their website.
On October 29, 2010, Hooverphonic announced their new single The Night Before on their website. The video clip features fourteen possible singers, but only one of them, Noémie Wolfs , turned out to be Geike Arnaert's real successor. On November 4th, 2010, she was presented on De Laatste Show on VRT (Flemish Public Broadcasting Company). The new album was released at the end of November 2010. After two more studio and one live album, Wolfs left the band in March 2015. For the album In Wonderland , which was released in 2016, various guest singers were then engaged.
In 2018, the then seventeen year old Luka Cruysberghs took up the position of singer in the band. She had previously won the Flemish version of the talent show The Voice . In April 2018, the UMG label released the single Romantic , which reached number 14 in the Flemish charts .
On October 1, 2019, they were selected by the Flemish broadcaster VRT to represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam . Belgium was the first of the participating countries to announce its performers. On March 18, 2020, the ESC 2020 had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The band is now set to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 for Belgium.
