Pierre Rapsat (born May 28, 1948 in Ixelles , † April 20, 2002 in Verviers ; actually Pierre Raepsaet ) was a Belgian singer and songwriter .

Life

Rapsat was born to a Flemish family and a daughter from Asturian refugees. When he was six years old, the family moved to Verviers. After having gained some experience with various music groups, he started his solo career in 1973. His mix of chanson and rock music wasn't very successful at first, but over the years he released albums in English and French at regular intervals. In 1976 he took part in the Belgian preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest , which was organized by the Walloon TV station RTBF under the title Avant-première eurovision . With the self-composed song Judy et compagnie to the text by Eric van Hulse, he was able to win the preselection against the other four participants. At the Eurovision Song Contest 1976 in The Hague , he was able to achieve eighth place with 68 points with the song, which was now called Judy et cie . After further publications, he achieved his first major sales success in 1982, when he sold 30,000 copies of his album Lâchez les fauves in French-speaking Belgium. After many other albums, he achieved success for the first time in France in 2001 with Dazibao .

Rapsat died in 2002 as a result of cancer. He lived in Verviers until his death. A few days before his death, the best-of album Tous les rêves was released , which reached number one on the Walloon charts on May 4th. Posthumously, a number of other best-of albums were released, which were able to place in the Belgian album charts. Saisons - anthology volume 1 reached number one on the Walloon charts and stayed in the top 50 for 54 weeks. In addition, two of his previous albums hit the charts again.
