Ann Christy (born September 22, 1945 in Antwerp , Flanders ; †  August 7, 1984 in Meise , Flanders; actually Christiane Leenaerts ) was a Belgian singer and musical artist .

Life

Leenaerts began her musical career as a singer in the band The Adams . In the mid-1960s, she released her first single. Kussen onder regenbogen , a Dutch version of the song Kisses under the rainbow by Manuela was not a commercial success. It was around this time that she met her future manager, Robert Bylois. In the following years she mainly interpreted French songs and accompanied Salvatore Adamo on a tour through France. In 1968 she won the Knokke Cup singing competition . In 1970 she took part in the Belgian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , which was organized by the Walloon TV broadcaster RTB , but was eliminated in the semifinals with the song Le temps, le vent . In 1971 , 1973 and 1975 she took part again in the preliminary rounds, which were broadcast by the Flemish broadcaster BRT , which is responsible every other year . In 1971 she reached second place with the title Dag vreemde man . In 1973 she came in third place with the song Bye bye ; her second song Meeuwen received zero points. In 1975 she won the preselection on her fourth and last attempt with Gelukkig zijn . In the same year she also took third place with Als je eenzaam bent . At the Eurovision Song Contest 1975 in Stockholm she received 17 points for the song ( Could it be happiness ), which is now half sung in English, and thus reached 15th place out of 19 participants.

From 1977 Ann Christy was on stage 152 times for the musical Midzomernachtsdroom . In 1978 she recorded the original versions of the songs If I Don't Be there by Morning and Walk out in the Rain . These were written by Bob Dylan with Helena Springs, but never recorded. Both songs were later covered by Eric Clapton for his album Backless . In 1980 she had a small success with De roos , a cover version of Bette Midler's hit The Rose . In 1982 she went on tour through Flanders with Erik Van Neygen before falling ill with cervical cancer shortly afterwards . In 1984 she died of the disease at the age of 38. She is buried in Tit .

In November 2005 the album Ik deed alsof het mij niet raakte was released posthumously . In addition to three old hits, it contains eight previously unreleased recordings, including six songs from the musical Midzomernachtsdroom . In 2005 she was ranked 102nd in the list of the greatest Belgians compiled for the television show Belg der Belgen .

Ann Christy was married to Marc Hoyois, drummer for The Adams band . This was his second marriage to the singer Liliane Saint-Pierre . Hoyois suffered from prostate cancer and died in 2010 after complications following a fall.
