Dream Express was a Belgian pop group from the 1970s. It consisted of the three sisters Stella , Patricia and Bianca Maessen as well as Luc Smets and represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 1977.

history

The Dutch sisters Stella, Bianca and Patricia Maessen had already celebrated successes in their home country as Hearts of Soul . In 1972 they moved to Belgium and the group broke up. In 1975 they formed Dream Express with Bianca's husband Luc Smets, who had success with the band Pebbles . With the title of the same name Dream Express , they reached number two in the Flemish sales charts in 1976. In 1977 they took part as one of three groups in the Belgian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , which was organized by the Flemish TV station BRT under the title Eurosong . In two preliminary rounds, the three titles Sold It for a Song, Spinning Top and A Million in 1, 2, 3 were initially selected for the final round, in which Dream Express won the preselection against the other two groups. At the Eurovision Song Contest 1977 in London they received 69 points and thus reached seventh place out of 18 participants. A Million in 1, 2, 3 was presented entirely in English, although the competition rules only allowed contributions in the respective national languages. Like the German representatives Silver Convention, Dream Express received an exemption, as the preliminary decision had already taken place before the rule change. A Million in 1, 2, 3 was a number one hit in Belgium and until 2010 ( Tom Dice reached 6th place) it was the last competition entry of the Flemish television broadcaster, which is responsible for every second year, to make it into the top ten . In 1979, the group disbanded after Patricia Maessen left.

After the separation

Stella and Patricia Maessen and Luc Smets released the single Uncle Jim in 1979 under the name "LBS" . Stella was successful as a solo artist and represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 1982 in Harrogate , where she finished fourth. Bianca released a few singles in the 1980s and 1990s. Patricia was background singer for Sandra Kim at the Eurovision Song Contest 1986 and for Plastic Bertrand at the ESC 1987 . She died on May 15, 1996 at the age of 44.
