Johannes Willem van der Hoek (born May 5, 1933 in Rotterdam , † February 4, 2017 ) was a Dutch football player . The defender was active for Feijenoord from 1950 to 1959 ; twice he was appointed to the national team.

Club career

Van der Hoek became a member of Feijenoord at the age of 13. Four years later, on November 5, 1950 against XerxesDZB , he made his debut as a left winger in the Rotterdam first team. He later played in defense. In 1954, shortly before the official introduction of professional football in the Netherlands, he was one of the first players to receive money for their achievements; Feijenoord paid him 4,000 guilders so that he would not be lured away by Fortuna'54 , one of the newly founded clubs of the professional football association NBVB. He stayed with Feijenoord until 1960; in 176 championship games he scored 24 goals. After two broken legs, in an international B match and in a match against PSV , he lost his regular place and moved to the Enschede sports club in July 1960 . A year later he went to ADO Den Haag , where he ended his active career.

National team

After Van der Hoek had played in various youth and regional selections, he was invited to the Elftal away game in Norway in September 1953 . On September 27, he made his Oranje debut at Oslo's Ullevaal Stadium ; the hosts won 4-0. In the following five games under bond coach Jaap van der Leck he sat on the bench; he only got a chance on the field more than a year later under the new coach Max Merkel on October 24, 1954 against Belgium ; this game was lost in Antwerp 3-4.

The next international match took place on March 13, 1955. There was now official professional football in the Netherlands, and the previously banned international professionals - who had meanwhile largely moved to the new professional clubs at home - were allowed to compete in the national team again. In the 1-1 draw against Denmark van der Hoek was back in the squad, but just sat on the bench again, as in the game afterwards. He later played for the B-selection of the KNVB; on March 27, 1957 he broke his leg for the first time in the game Netherlands B against Germany B in Essen ; after the mishap was repeated a little later, he also lost his regular place in the club.

Trainer

In his last active year at ADO Den Haag , he represented his coach Ernst Happel in ten games . He then coached several amateur clubs, including VV Papendrecht, with whom he won four lower-class championships. In 1982 he came back to Rotterdam and coached the Feyenoord amateur team; later he also became a board member of the Feyenoord amateurs.

Away from the football field

Van der Hoek was married to Elly Heiden, a daughter of the former speed skating world record holder Siem Heiden . He himself was twice senior champion in the ice skating department of Feijenoord.
