Thames Gateway Bridge

The Thames Gateway Bridge was a projected road bridge over the River Thames in London . It should open in 2013 and connect Beckton in the London Borough of Newham on the north side with Thamesmead in the Royal Borough of Greenwich on the south side.

Technical details

The bridge with a length of 650 meters should span the river at a height of 50 meters. This would have been necessary to enable ships to pass through and at the same time not to block the approach path to the nearby London City Airport . Four lanes were planned for individual and two lanes for public transport as well as a cycle path and a pedestrian path. It should also be possible to run a tram line or a branch of the Docklands Light Railway over the bridge.

The cost of construction was estimated at £ 435 million. The application for a building permit was submitted in 2004, a decision should have been made in spring 2007. However, the Ministry of Transport refused to give its consent as many objections could not yet be dealt with.

Planning stop

On November 6, 2008, the Lord Mayor of the City of London stopped planning. The reasons for abandoning the project were the resistance of the local population to the project, lack of clarity as to whether the project can be financed at all, the disadvantages for traffic flows resulting from route planning and concerns as to whether this project would withstand an environmental impact assessment.

Furthermore, it was confirmed by independent sources that no further route investigations will be carried out.
