Bayard's Cove Fort

Bayard's Cove Fort is a small Artillery - Fortress from the Tudor -time in Dartmouth in the English county of Devon . It was built in 1510 by the Dartmouth Corporation , the association of Dartmouther merchants, directly on the Dart River and offered protection against intruders from the sea at the mouth of the river in the English Channel .

Bayard's Cove Fort was the first fort in England to be built and paid for by private individuals.

Today it is managed by English Heritage and can be visited free of charge.
