Woolwich pedestrian tunnel
The Woolwich foot tunnel ( engl. Woolwich foot tunnel ) is a tunnel under the river Thames in London . It connects North Woolwich in the London Borough of Newham on the north side with Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich on the south side. The 504 meter long tunnel offers pedestrians an alternative way to get to the other side of the river when the Woolwich Ferry is not in service.
The tunnel was built on behalf of London County Council and opened in 1912. In terms of construction, it is similar to the Greenwich pedestrian tunnel further upstream . It has two entrance buildings with domes, from which elevators and stairs lead down, the elevators are not in operation in the evening and at night. The tunnel tube is clad with white tiles and has a slotted cable that enables undisturbed reception for cell phones.
