Postel is a hamlet in the Belgian municipality of Mol , which belongs to the province of Antwerp . It is assigned to the De Kempen landscape . Postel is located on the Dutch border, the distance to the Dutch town of Reusel is less than that to the center of Mol. With an area of ​​44.43 km², the hamlet is the largest district of Mol, in which with 220 inhabitants (as of December 31 2007) but by far the fewest inhabitants live.

The area consists largely of forest and natural landscape. There are also some large farms, some of which specialize in growing turf .

Premonstratensian Abbey

Postel is best known for its Premonstratensian Abbey . The Postel Abbey, founded in 1138, was a priory of the Floreffe Abbey until 1613 and only then became independent. As a result of the French occupation, it was closed. From 1797 it was privately owned for several decades and was only returned to the order in 1847.

The abbey church, originally built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century , also has elements added later in the Gothic style, the tower was not built until the Baroque era .

The abbey has been known since 1960 for the beer of the same name , which is now brewed in Opwijk . With small interruptions, the abbey itself brewed for its own use from 1611 to 1943. There is also a cheese named after the abbey .

Postel is roughly on the watershed between the Meuse and the Scheldt Basin . In the north of Postel the waters of the Meuse flow into, while the waters in the west and south run out to Nete . Postel Abbey is approximately 38 meters above sea level. The highest point of the hamlet is at a height of 43 meters.
