history

Karakara in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Karakara was founded in the 19th century by Hausa , who, according to tradition, immigrated from Bornu . The place submitted to the French mission Voulet-Chanoine on March 18, 1899 . The French established a canton in Karakara at the beginning of the 20th century . As part of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, the Karakara canton became the Karakara rural community. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Gaya department , but to the newly created Dioundiou department.

population

At the 2001 census, Karakara had 31,511 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 44,333.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops . There are several weekly markets in Karakara. Market day is Friday in the main town of Karakara and the administrative village of Yeldou, and Thursday in the administrative village of Massama. National Road 2 runs through Karakara and connects the town with Koré Maïroua and Farey , among others .

Twin town

Since 2007 there has been a town partnership with Mol in Belgium .
