Dioundiou (also: Dioudou , German obsolete: Djundju ) is a rural community and the capital of the Dioundiou department in Niger .

geography

Dioundiou is located in the greater Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the east . The neighboring communities in Niger are Karguibangou , Karakara , Tessa and Zabori in the north, Yélou in the south and Farey in the west. The municipality is divided into 60 administrative villages, 46 traditional villages, four hamlets and 14 camps. The main town of the rural municipality is the administrative village of Dioundiou.

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valleys Dallol Foga and Dallol Maouri run through the municipality in a north-south direction .

history

The French Mission Voulet-Chanoine faced 600 warriors from Dioundiou in 1899. The fortified site was taken by the French in a charge , injuring Paul Voulet , the mission leader. The French established a canton in Dioundiou at the beginning of the 20th century .

The rural community of Dioundiou emerged from the canton of Dioundiou in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. In 2009 floods attempted material damage, which directly affected 595 residents. In the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 399 people were classified as disaster victims in Dioundiou. Since 2011, the rural community no longer belongs to the Gaya department , but to the newly created Dioundiou department.

population

At the 2001 census, Dioundiou had 37,338 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 54,157.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Mamane Sidi ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers appointed Issoufou Soumana as Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipalities of Dioundiou, Karakara and Zabori and Mahamadou Bizo as Head of the Administrative Post ( Chef de poste administratif ) of Dioundiou.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the east of the municipality, irrigation farming is practiced, the west belongs to a zone in which rain-fed agriculture is predominant. There are several weekly markets in Dioundiou. Market day is Monday in the main town of Dioundiou and Friday in the administrative village of Koutoumbou. Dioundiou is located on the national road 2 , which connects the place with the neighboring communities of Farey and Zabori.
