Yélou (German outdated: Yelu ) is a rural community in the Gaya department in Niger .

geography

Yélou is located in the Dendi region and in the Sudan region and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the east . The neighboring communities in Niger are Dioundiou in the north, Bana , Gaya and Tanda in the south and Farey , Gollé and Sambéra in the west. There are 54 villages, 131 hamlets and 22 camps in the municipality of Yélou. The main town of the rural community is the village of Yélou. Other larger villages are Malgorou and Kawara N'Débé .

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valleys Dallol Foga and Dallol Maouri run through the municipality in a north-south direction .

history

Yélou was founded by the Tyenga ethnic group who settled in the area of ​​today's Gaya department in the 17th century. The German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth visited the place in 1853. The French colonial administration made Yélou a canton at the beginning of the 20th century . The rural community of Yélou emerged from the canton of Yélou in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform.

At the 2001 census, Yélou had 45,496 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 68,404.

politics

Moumouni Moussa ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor in the local elections in July 2004 .

Economy and Infrastructure

In the east of the municipality, irrigation farming is practiced, the west belongs to a zone in which rain-fed agriculture is predominant. There are several weekly markets in Yélou. Market day is Monday in the main town of Yélou and in the village of Kawara N'Débé, and Friday in the village of Malgorou.
