Tanda lies on the Niger River in the Dendi landscape and the Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Benin in the southwest . The neighboring communities in Niger are Sambéra in the northwest, Yélou in the northeast and Gaya in the southwest. The municipality is divided into 15 administrative villages, 79 traditional villages, five hamlets and a camp. The main town of the rural community is the village of Tanda. There is a high risk of flooding in Tanda. In the municipal area is the inhabited river island Lété , which was awarded to the Republic of Niger in a border conflict with Benin in 2005. Parts of the municipality belong to two zones that are protected under the Ramsar Convention : the wetland on central Niger and, including the main town, the wetland on central Niger II .

history

Tanda was founded by the Tyenga people, who settled the area of today's Gaya department in the 17th century, together with Songhai , who immigrated from Gao . When Mission Voulet-Chanoine came to the area in 1899 as part of the submission of Niger to the colonial power of France , Tanda had all female residents evacuated.

The rural community of Tanda was formed in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. Until then, their territory belonged together with Tounouga to the Canton of Gaya. In the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 2,031 residents of Tanda were classified as disaster victims.

population

At the 2001 census, Tanda had 33,647 residents. At the 2012 census, the population was 49,973.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are several weekly markets in Tanda. Market day is Monday in the main town of Tanda and Thursday in the village of Sia. Tanda's market is one of the largest in the region, attracting traders from neighboring Benin and Nigeria . In the east of the municipality, irrigation farming is practiced, including for growing rice.
