Bengou (German outdated: Bengu ) is a rural community in the Gaya department in Niger .

geography

Bengou is located in the Dendi landscape and in the Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the east . The neighboring communities in Niger are Bana in the northwest and Gaya in the southwest. The municipality is divided into six administrative villages and eleven traditional villages. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Bengou. The 12th north latitude runs along the northern edge of the main town .

The large, periodically water-bearing dry valley Dallol Maouri runs through the municipality in a north-south direction .

history

During the French colonial period in the first third of the 20th century, Bengou initially formed its own canton . However, this was dissolved in the 1930s and its area joined the Canton of Bana. The subordination of Bengou to the traditional chiefs of Bana led to a series of conflicts between the two places. In the course of a nationwide administrative reform in 2002, Bengou was again detached from Bana as an independent rural community.

population

At the 2001 census, Bengou had 13,452 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 18,469. The population of Bengou is of different ethnic origins, including the Fulbe , Hausa , Kanuri and Zarma . The dominant language and culture is that of the Hausa. A significant group of Tyenga live in the main town .

Economy and Infrastructure

There is a weekly market in Bengou. The market day is Friday. The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops . The comparatively favorable climatic conditions for Niger allow the high-yield cultivation of vegetables, sugar cane, mangoes and sweet potatoes. Bengou has two elementary schools and one middle school, an infirmary and agricultural service facilities.
