history

After Niger gained independence in 1960, the national territory was divided into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ). One of them was the Gaya district. 1964 an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. In the course of this, the Gaya district was converted into the Gaya arrondissement. From March to August 1996, Yahaya Chaibou headed the arrondissement as sub-prefect.

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Gaya and the cantons of Gaya, Bana, Dioundiou, Karakara, Yélou and Zabori. In 2011 Dioundiou was separated from the Gaya department as a separate department.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Gaya department has 261,638 inhabitants. In the 2001 census, before the separation of Dioundiou, there were 253,444 inhabitants, in the 1988 census 164,103 inhabitants and in the 1977 census 112,868 inhabitants.

administration

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
