Dioundiou is a department in the region Dosso in Niger .

geography

The department is located in the south-west of the country and borders Nigeria . It consists of the rural parishes of Dioundiou , Karakara and Zabori . The eponymous capital of the department is Dioundiou.

The entire department is part of the 317,520 hectare wetland of the Dallol Maouri , which is a protected area as one of the Ramsar areas of Niger .

history

The department goes back to the administrative post ( poste administratif ) of Dioundiou, which was established in 1965. In 2011 the administrative post was removed from the Gaya department and raised to the Dioundiou department.

population

According to the 2012 census, the Dioundiou department has 109,615 inhabitants. From 2001 to 2012 the population increased by an average of 3.4% annually (nationwide: 3.9%).

At the head of the department is a prefect (French: préfet ) who is appointed by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior .
