history

Kalliul (Kawara N'Débé) in Stieler's Hand Atlas (1891)

Kawara N'Débé was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by Hausa refugees from Kebbi , whose hometown Birnin Debe had been destroyed in the jihad of the Fulbe . The German Africa explorer Heinrich Barth visited Kawara N'Débé (Kalliul) in July 1853 and August 1854. He described the Fulbe settlement at that time as a center of salt production. This was important well into the 20th century. In 1924, an estimated 149 workers were employed in the salt production in Kawara N'Débé.

population

At the 2012 census, Kawara N'Débé had 3,132 inhabitants who lived in 400 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 2,144 in 275 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 2,381 in 314 households. Previously recorded population figures were: 1148 in 1964, 1010 in 1960, 876 in 1953 and 255 in 1932.
