Paul Janssen (born September 12, 1926 in Turnhout , Belgium , † November 11, 2003 in Rome ) was a Belgian chemist and the founder of the Belgian pharmaceutical company Janssen Pharmaceutica . Janssen Pharmaceutica has been part of Johnson & Johnson since the 1950s .

Life

Paul Janssen was born to Constant Janssen and Margriet Fleerackers. During the Second World War Paul Janssen studied chemistry at the Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix (FUNDP) in Namur , followed by a medical degree in Ghent . Janssen graduated magna cum laude in Ghent in 1951 .

During his military service Janssen worked at the University of Cologne at the Institute for Pharmacology with J. Schuller. Janssen founded his own laboratory in 1953 with a loan from his father of 50,000 Belgian francs . This laboratory was the nucleus of Janssen Pharmaceutica. Janssen Pharmaceutica developed and discovered more than 80 new drugs under his leadership, five of which are on the WHO Essential Medicines List .

Honors

Paul Janssen has received honorary doctorates 22 times. In 1982 he received a Gairdner Foundation International Award and in 1989 the Jacob Henle Medal . In 1990 Janssen was ennobled by the Belgian King Albert II and made a baron because of his services to Belgium . In 2005 he was elected “second greatest Belgian of all time” (behind Father Damien , ahead of Eddy Merckx ).

After him, the Dr. Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research .
