history

Altforweiler originally belonged to the pastoral care of the parish of the abandoned town of Eschweiler . Today the Oranna Chapel is located there . With the assignment to the parish of Berus , attending church services was a difficult path and in Altforweiler the desire for a church of their own resulted .

In 1836, construction of a chapel began in Altforweiler on the property of the wealthy widow Leinen, which the Altforweiler community donated to the community of Altforweiler. The chapel was consecrated to the Apostle Matthias, alluding to the name of the widow's husband. The consecration of the chapel took place on 21 October. 1838

Altforweiler became a chapel congregation on April 1, 1923, and an independent parish on August 1, 1925, with Johannes Strupp as the first pastor .

A good 90 years after its completion, the need for a new church arose due to moisture, the low construction and, above all, the increasing lack of space. A church building association was founded on December 18, 1927, the first groundbreaking for the new church took place on September 11, 1932, and the foundation stone was laid on July 7, 1933 . The church was built according to plans by the Trier architect Peter Marx . Building contractor Adam Ehl (Altforweiler) was responsible for the execution. Local sandstone served as building material . The benediction took place on July 7, 1935. The solemn consecration on November 6, 1936 was carried out by the Trier auxiliary bishop Albert Maria Fuchs .

The construction of the church, which was built by the community in-house, could be accomplished debt-free.

In the years 1990 to 1999 the church underwent a restoration .

With effect from September 1, 2007, the parishes and parishes of St. Matthias (Altforweiler), St. Martin (Berus) and St. Nikolaus ( Felsberg ) were merged to form a parish and parish with the name of St. Oranna Überherrn . Parish church of the newly established parish was St. Matthias in Altforweiler.
